Great Apes of Africa

The tiny, landlocked country of Rwanda has one of Africa’s most rapidly growing economies, with its entrepreneurial capital of Kigali. But it’s most famous for its unparalleled wildlife experiences—the crown jewel being the world’s last remaining mountain gorillas, which live in the mist-shrouded jungles of Volcanoes National Park. Notable guide and ecologist Ant Kaschula leads this epic journey through what many people refer to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” thanks to the country’s undulating topography. Kaschula’s deep connections in the conservation world—he’s on the board of African Parks, an NGO that helps to manage key parks in Rwanda—means he can connect travelers with field experts for candid discussions about conservation.

Before setting off into the jungles and rainforests, the trip begins with a couple of days in the creative capital of Kigali, with an important stop to the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about the resilience of a nation still healing from the 1994 atrocities. Then travel by helicopter from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park, where two mountain gorilla treks await (at an hour each, one trek isn’t enough). From there, spend three days exploring the Nyungwe Forest and its unusually large population of Colobus monkeys. End the trip at Akagera Park, managed by African Parks, which offers a big game safari with lions, elephants and endangered rhinos from Wilderness Safaris Magashi Camp, the park’s only private concession.

Trip highlights

Mountain Gorilla Trek

One of the world’s most coveted wildlife experiences is also tightly controlled by the Rwandan government for the preservation of the endangered mountain gorillas. Only one group of up to eight people per day can visit a gorilla family, and encounters are tightly controlled at one hour—which is why two treks are better than one. But it’s worth it for the humbling experience of having close encounters with these majestic creatures.

Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trek

Trek in search of these elusive tree chimps, our closest living relative and second largest primate, in Nyungwe Forest National Park, which happens to be one of the oldest rainforests in Africa.

Nyungwe Canopy Tour

Get up into the trees to experience the incredible biodiversity of the relatively untouristed Nyungwe Forest National Park from a bird’s-eye view and be rewarded with sightings of some of the 322 bird, 1,068 plant and 13 primate species on record.

Wildlife Conservation Up Close

Akagera National Park is jointly run by NGO African Parks, a groundbreaking conservation initiative and an incredible success story that resuscitated a suffering park into a protected game reserve that’s home to the Big Five. Kaschula can offer guests exclusive access to behind-the-scenes conservation initiatives in the park.

The Heartbeat of Kigali

Kigali is a young city filled with creative entrepreneurs who are shaping the future of Rwanda. An urban safari explores the colorful markets and active art and food scene and will include a moving visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial.
