Botswana, from Desert to Delta

Trip Description

Botswana’s contrasting ecosystems feel like separate worlds: there’s the Okavango Delta, an inland floodplain that seasonally saturates a corner of the parched Kalahari Desert and creates a green oasis that’s teeming with elephants, buffalo, and opportunistic crocodiles and lions. Lying in an arid region to the southeast, the Makgadikgadi salt pans are dotted with thick-trunked baobabs and subterranean-dwelling meerkats, and are home to the San people, who have relied on these lands for millennia. This nine-night trip to both regions will be led by one of Botswana’s most sought-after guides, the jovial and relentlessly candid Peter Allison (author of Whatever You Do Don’t Run and Don’t Look Behind You). The itinerary explores both the delta and the desert in myriad ways: take a mokoro, or canoe, through the hippo and croc-filled waterways, walk through the desert with the San people to learn about traditional medicines and foods, or take a helicopter trip to see ancient cave art in the Tsodilo Hills.

Lodgings embed guests in the heart of these singular landscapes. Mapula Lodge, composed of nine canvas-walled, thatch-roofed tents on an inlet in the Okavango, offers an optional island sleepout. In the Makgadikgadi salt pans, guests base themselves out of the world-famous Jack’s Camp, where nine double-canvas tents draped in crimson textiles preserve its 1940s-era vibe.

Trip highlights

Flavors of the Kalahari

Noted France-born, Cape Town-based chef Franck Dangereux, who recently reimagined the menu at Jack’s Camp, will host and cook dinner for guests over three nights and lead an interactive foraging walk with the region’s San people.

The Delta by Dugout Canoe

Get a more intimate look at the Okavango Delta ecosystem in a traditional wooden mokoro, or dugout canoe; while weaving through the labyrinthine waterways, expect close (but not too close!) encounters with grunting hippos, bathing elephants, lurking crocodiles and hundreds of species of birds.

Ancient Cave Art in the Kalahari

From Mapula Lodge, travel by helicopter into the sand dunes and quartzite formations of the UNESCO World Heritage Site-designated Tsodilo Hills. Upon arrival, meet a resident San and Hambukusu guide, who will lead the group into an ancient cave filled with rock art and fossils.

Night Under the Stars

For the intrepid, Mapula Lodge offers a sleepout option on one of the Okavango Delta’s many small islands, allowing visitors to get that much closer to nature in this wildlife-filled region.

Adventures on the Salt Pans

The desert expanse of the Madkadikadi Salt Plans begs for adventure: visit the Baines baobabs, which have been standing for more than 1,000 years; hop on a quad bike or take horses out on the pans; walk with San people on their ancestral land; or pay a visit to the habituated meerkats near their subterranean home.
